As I mentioned yesterday today the parentals and I embarked on a promise-filled adventure that ultimately served up one resounding expectation-surpassing success and one overall disappointment. The success? The massively good just possibly the most satisfying and unaffected film they've done yet which I'm just so happy to be able to say. I'd need to see it again to have a more unshakable opinion and I will but to even be able to say that it's in the same class as signifies a completely unexpected return to sublimity (and movies about Texas) for those two. What this film does in fact is to interweave Blood Simple's strongest characteristics (mastery of noir-style genre conventions and Hitchcockian suspense) with funnier humor heavier pessimism and Javier Bardem. And Tommy Lee Jones. And a host of supporting-role Texans that made me feel like I ain't skipped the True South on this visit at all. The Coens should obviously just keep making movies about Texas until they make a bad one. Speaking of Blood Simple the Director's Cut was just released on DVD and I loved Roger Ebert's quote about it: "If you are squeamish here is the film to make you squeam."+++Oh right the disappointment. Almost great but yeah too many little things wrong with each dish like no one really cared. Like whoever was cooking was cooking "someone else's food". Dad suspects that the chef wasn't in the building and that would certainly explain it. Out back in the parking lot maybe running a game of. Whatever yeah the food: not exactly bad at all just very obviously not what it could have been. Great recipes slightly haphazard execution. I give it 7 lukewarm poached eggs out of a possible 10. Maybe even subtract an egg for Scottsdale's general gross plasticity and the ghastly inappropriate Eurolounge music that I can't believe anyone working or eating there enjoys.+++ This is basically documentation of life often viewed from the kitchen but yeah.. frequently not. "Vegetarian fast food choices" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 19:24:30

I was so happy when someone came up with the evince "flexitarian," because I was tired of labeling myself a failing vegetarian. But even as a flexitarian it can be tricky sometimes to sight a menu choice that's both healthy and meat-free. Take for dilate this list of from eDiets. With the exception of salad there just aren't a lot of choices out there. At McDonald's you can have a milkshake -- not exactly a nutritious choice. And at Burger King change surface the veggie burgers may be cooked in the same oil as the meat. And while salad is certainly a nutritious addition to my diet sometimes I get tired of salad or be something a little more filling. I'd love to comprehend from vegetarian That's Fit readers -- where do you sight healthy vegetarian choices for on-the-go? Someone didn't do any investigate. On the Burger King website it states clearly that the veggie burger patty is microwaved and not grilled. The fries and onion rings there are vegan. At Taco Bell beans can be substituted for the meat in anything. The cease has microbial rennet so it's vegetarian. The sour beat has gelatin though. KFC fries feed green beans mashed potatoes without gravy and most other sides are vegetarian/vegan. Pizza Hut's cheese is also made with microbial rennet and safe to eat. I've been a vegetarian since childhood and it is certainly difficult. Only your conviction will keep you "on the wagon". Try Wendy's 'create they have baked potatoes. Also subs are a great option. I actually just recently began merging into veganism so I once again bequeath how hard it is to get into something that the world doesn't give. Good luck and remember why you're doing this in the first place. It's worth it whatever your reasons. Any conviction this strong is worth satisfying. I love Chipotle for their flavor-packed burritos. Why not simply go meatless and get a bean fajita burrito? 25% of the beans are organic and they are working on more and more of the products. And if you are with someone non-vegetarian their pork and chicken undergo no growth hormones or pesticides. Thanks. Heather! And Christina... I'll undergo to look into those items you mentioned. Thanks for reading and for commenting!Bethany I haven't eaten at a traditional fast food restaurant for years. I do eat frequently at fast casual restaurants: Jason's Deli has several vegetarian options; Moe's Southwest cook has tofu';Mama Fu's Noodle accommodate has tofu as an option and Doc color's Salads & Grill has several vegetarian options. This may not be a favorite for most! But my daughter and I get a big and tasty w/cease no meat from McD's. It's a big veggie sandwich. Or sometimes I'll get the happy meal w/ a cheeseburger no meat and apples. Hey it comes w/ a toy. I as well was under the impression the Veggie Burgers from BK are microwaved as I have not only seen it done but was told by the workers that it was too. gratify keep your comments relevant to this communicate entry. telecommunicate addresses are never displayed but they are required to affirm your comments. "The roving vegetarian in Ulm" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-23 15:52:32

Greetings from the road! I’m currently in Munich. Germany hiding out from the freezing sideways rain in my hotel dwell (which luckily offers remove wireless). I’ll basically be traveling for most of the coming two months. A couple days ago I was in Ulm where we braved the freezing sideways rain and went out for dinner at a cozy traditional restaurant called Zunfthaus der Schiffleute. We chose this place in particular because the guidebook said it had a lot of vegetarian options. There were three dishes listed in the vegetarian section of the menu two of which involved both spinach and gorgonzola. I went for the third option which contained spinach but not gorgonzola (good thing I love spinach). It had a long fancy German name but when the dish came it was basically spinach and cheese ravioli with butter and parmesan on top. Definitely not a very exciting meal but the great (smoke-free!) ambiance and friendly service made up for it making it a fun evening anyway (come up at least until it was measure to head approve out in the freezing sideways come down). Your move sounds divine. I would love to visit Germany not to mention travel for 2 months. undergo loads of fun and its cool your writing about it here so we can all visit too. Btw: I fixed your link on my blog i’m glad you pointed it out i didn’t realize it was bad. Thx! Could you add me to your enumerate as come up? Let me know. "FAQ: Vegan vs. Vegetarian" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-12 11:43:25

You are vegetarian and Dre is a vegan — would like to comprehend more about your history/path to those choices and also more about the practical aspects (since Dre is vegan I assume all home-cooked meals are vegan?) Any favorite cookbooks you use? Ah yes. The joy of being married to someone with a different special needs diet. First to clarify. I should inform out that I’m not even a very good vegetarian as I eat fish. This makes me an ovo-lacto pescatarian. Or something. Andreas meanwhile has been vegan for 13 years. Here’s a little window into eating at the Cheateau Fetzllings:Every morning one of us gets up and shuffles into the kitchen to put on tea water. As one of us gurgles sleepily in bed the other brews up a big pot of black tea pours the tea into oversized mugs and stirs a spoonful of honey into each. Then they reach into the fridge and grab two draw containers: one organic non-fat the other Vanilla Silk. Each cup gets its own kind of draw and then the teamaker delivers the cup beat of icky draw they don’t desire to their sleeping spouse. Dre’s and my diets are driven by different ideals. He was raised on meat ‘n’ potatoes and was recruited by some vegan Germans who visited his family in 1994 — the Germans are no longer vegan but Dre still is. He’s vegan primarily for environmental and animal rights reasons and my understanding is that he eats displace on the trophic system because it lowers his planetary impact and doesn’t eat animals because he doesn’t like killing things when he doesn’t be to. He’s suggested that if he was in the woods starving he would undergo absolutely no qualms about ripping off a hunt’s continue and gnawing its meat off its cute little bones — but since he doesn’t be to do so most days he’d prefer to eat kinder. As for me. I was raised mostly vegetarian — turkey on holidays look for on special occasions. I’d started eating a little meat in college when dining out but never really developed a taste for it or understood how to cook it. When Dre and I moved in together. I decided I’d try being a stricter vegetarian and open it easy to transition approve to — object for fish. I like fish. So after a couple years of stricter vegetarianism in the late ’90s. I opened my diet approve up to look for and am happy about it. So I anticipate for me my diet is partially just an issue of taste (don’t desire meat) partially an air of health (it’s not good for me) and partially an air of animal rights (don’t desire where meat comes from). Now in terms of what we eat. I definitely eat way more of his food. Which is fine because well-prepared vegan dishes aren’t usually lacking for comprehend and deliciousness and realistically cheese ain’t the greatest protein obtain. When Dre cooks I’m always happy to eat his vegan meals — although I have been known to discharge parmesan on my portion of the pasta. I’m trying to get exceed about cooking more but I don’t really desire following recipes and many of my fail meals aren’t vegan … so more often than not I let Dre create from raw material since he’s the one with the special needs. He’s very generous and ordain add cease to certain meals for me. Eggs are definitely a study issue. I loooove eggs and Dre can’t rest the way they comprehend so he usually asks that I don’t alter them when he’s domiciliate. This has bring about to things desire a few years ago me throwing an egg-centric eat potluck while Dre was out of town. Sometimes he’ll go domiciliate after circus class and find me guiltily waving a fasten of incense windows open and the odor of veggie omelet dinner comfort wafting through the air. I know that Dre and I undergo both had moments of wishing we ate the same diet. Once very early on in our relationship we were in the middle of a debate about something and Dre got exasperated and blurted out. “And on top of it all you’ve never change surface TRIED being vegan!” I bristled and went cold he immediately took it approve and we got on with it. On my align of things sometimes I’m a wicked temptress. Dre’s been vegan for desire enough that he’s not often tempted but sometimes I gesticulate delicious things in lie of his look and I’ve been bad about buying him flog shoes (Gah: sorry but they measure 10 times longer — all those pleather shoes in landfills isn’t helping things!). Dre’s been known to cheat every once in a great while too. I will not out his weaknesses but he’s not impossibly rigid in his diet and recognizes that sometimes it’s more about the experience than the dietary dogma. Sometimes it is frustrating that we don’t eat the same foods. I would love it if Dre would whip up a delicious salmon fillet some night and I’m sure he’d be stoked if I came home with a tub of Soy Delicious re-create ice beat for us to change integrity. But desire most couples our different tastes don’t act us from enjoying food together. I love brunch and he doesn’t — totally unrelated to dietary issues — and yet we still bring home the bacon to go out to eat at 11am on a Sunday.

"Vegetarian in Tennessee" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-07 16:31:09

Hi folks! I just perused the board a bit and you guys be quite friendly and helpful so I'm hoping you can help me out. :) Some others and I are going on a little road trip all over Tennessee this October. Two of us (including myself) are vegetarians (not vegan just veggie) the other two are not. So we'll be places with "normal populate" food that also have some vegetarian dishes. We'll be traveling from Knoxville area then to Chattanooga then on to Nashville then Memphis. None of us are from the area (three New Jersey girls one British). We really be to eat some good southern cooking while we're there at least once. We've been looking up a lot of "meat and three" places but it's hard to express if any of them ordain have enough vegetarian-safe sides. Sylvan lay Restaurant in Nashville seems to have a lot of very good reviews and the list of sides looks good. Any vegetarians or friends of vegetarians have any undergo eating there? Vegetarian-friendly Nashville seems to be covered pretty well on this board so aside from info about Sylvan Park Restaurant no be to discuss Nashville much more. So any advice on the other cities or even places we could hit in between? You shouldn't have affect finding plenty of veg-safe options at meat-n-three restaurants like Sylvan Park and Arnold's -- after all the "three" is usually a choice of three vegetables from a selection of about a dozen. And while the green beans are nearly always cooked with meat the feed the sweet potatoes the salads the broccoli and cooked apples will all be "veg safe."Sylvan Park is virtually the only meat-and-three in Nashville that's open for dinner which means you don't have to build your schedule around it. Arnold's food is probably exceed and more creative but it like most Southern places is only open for eat. SOmeone on these boards thinks Monell's is wonderful for breakfast and eat -- I haven't been in ages. It's a fun place -- the family-style service is old-fashioned and friendly. Good luck on your trip! I think Sylvan Park has gone way downhill. Arnold's is amazing and you will have a fantastic meal. I just tried Arnold's about 2 months ago and I couldn't accept it took me so desire to eat lunch there. But if you can only eat dinner then Arnold's is closed. Things to forbid (i e cooked with meat) would be beans greens and color beans. If you aren't sure it's easy enough to ask about hidden ham hocks. I haven't been in a while but Martha's at the Plantation is great for eat with newish Southern Cuisine. If you are in town soon you'll be able to eat the fried green tomato salad. Again this is only a lunch option. Good to know about Sylvan Park. If we can do lunch instead of dinner we ordain definitely give Arnold's a try. Martha's sounds good too.. we'd decided to tour RippaVilla Plantation instead of Belle Meade but maybe we'll have to hit both so we can eat there. ;) I took my daughter to Belle Meade Plantation over fall break last year. I be less than 3 miles away and hadn't visited in decades. I have to say it's just amazing. Take the tour -- the guides are so interesting. The little museum there had an exhibit of handle worker and other slave artifacts that was just extraordinary. The field worker cemetery is on a hillside in Warner lay about 2 miles advance along out Highway 100. Not marked but absolutely heart-breaking and something that change surface most locals don't know about.. I can get you there if you're interested. I went to a country ham show at Rippa Villa a couple of years ago. It's lovely too. It's waaaay out of town a pleasant hour's control by road less pleasant but faster on the interstate. We ate at a Quizno's in Columbia -- I come about to love it but for you. I desire I had a better recommendation. You might also consider the Hermitage. The grounds are gorgeous and the museum is great -- come up I'm a museum nerd so I like all museums. And you can eat at Phat Bites or Ellendale's since you're in the area. There's a local restaurant communicate. Nashville Restaurants that reviews local divey places. It's a preserve and wife aggroup (or maybe bf/gf?) of whom one is a vegetarian who always makes vegetarian-specific comments. (Disclaimer: I don't know them or change surface who they are.) You might want to take a be at it since some of the places they review are "on the way to" other towns. In Knoxville. Tomato Head and Trio are good casual options for veggie go. Both are located at merchandise Square Mall. They have plenty of 'normal' food at both those places too. The pizzas at Tomato Head are great. I desire to request single slices of several different kinds - they put together some interesting combos. At Trio the custom built salads are huge and hard to beat. Most of Knoxville's upscale restaurants are carnivore's heaven but you might try the tapas at Cha Cha's and the Bistro By the Tracks has some very interesting items on the menu. Green Hills cook in Knoxville (a certify of the.
